Kidney Check Manitoba

  • Kidney Check Manitoba has screened over 370 individuals across 7 First Nations communities, with plans to reach additional communities as resources allow. The program also supports urban outreach, with tailored screening efforts underway in partnership with 18 organizations.
  • Capacity building is a key focus. The community of Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation is now independently delivering screenings, and training for point-of-care testing is being integrated into Red River College’s Diagnostic Support Worker Program.
  • A Virtual Kidney Check pilot is active in four communities, with mail-in screening continuing into 2025. To date, 127 volunteers have supported Kidney Check and Virtual Kidney Check activities.
  • In February 2025, a resolution was passed to expand screening for diabetes and its complications to all 63 First Nations communities in Manitoba. Discussions are ongoing with Manitoba Health and partners to support long-term sustainability and growth of the program.
